Terms and examples in GraspDATA reporting for segments, city pairs, and markets/market pairs.
Segment – A travel segment from one airport or rail station to the next. This is a takeoff from one airport and landing in another.
City Pair – An origin and a destination excluding any connecting cities and called a 'Trip' or a one way. A typical trip is comprised of 2 City Pairs or Trips regardless of the number of connections.
Complex Routing – A series of travel segments with more than one destination. Typically, this would include 3 or more trips including the return to the origin.
Connection – A connection is a flight segment where travel to the destination or return to the origin is interrupted by a stop at an interim airport. This may or may not require a change of planes.
Connection Indicator – In Grasp Data, the connection indicator is either an X or an O. An X indicates the flight segment is going To a connecting airport. An O indicates that the flight segment is going to a destination or the final segment back to the origin.
Itinerary (also called routing) – The complete series of legs associated with a booking.
Market or Market Pair – A Market or a Market Pair is the alphabetical representation of the City Pair and excludes connections. So, whichever city pair code is alphabetically less appears first. This allows for an outbound and return flight to be grouped together excluding any connecting cities regardless of the origin.
Trip(s) – A one-way excluding connections. A trip is each part of an itinerary where typically an overnight stay is involved, not a connecting flight. Travel could all occur on the same day.
Example: Below is a flight from San Diego, CA (SAN) to Columbus, OH (CMH) connecting through Chicago (ORD) each way.
Itinerary (or Routing) (The complete series of legs in a booking)
SAN-ORD-CMH-ORD-SAN
Segment Pairs (the raw flight segments)
SAN-ORD = 1 segment
ORD-CMH = 1 segment
CMH-ORD = 1 segment
ORD-SAN = 1 segment
City Pairs (Also called O and D or Origin and Destination Reports) (the flight segments excluding the connection airports)
SAN-CMH = 1 trip
CMH-SAN = 1 trip
Market Pairs (the alphabetical city pairs excluding connections)
CMH-SAN = 2 trips (this is generally how it shown on Market Pair reports)
Or
CMH-SAN = 1 trip
CMH-SAN = 1 trip
'Trips' are one-ways or an origin and a destination
